Feature Article Get your beta-carotene from mangoes Carrots have the rep, but go with mangoes. They're loaded with beta-carotene and vitamins C and E, three antioxidants that protect your eyes from vision-altering free-radical damage. "We know that these antioxidants help decrease vision loss in patients with age-related macular degeneration," says Peter Kaiser, M.D., a retinal surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic. Hate mangoes? Eat a kiwi. Research shows that high blood pressure may increase the risk of blindness in old age. Kiwis are packed with potassium, a natural BP buster. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ASK THE DOCTOR SPONSOR Are you trying to lose weight? Ask the Doctor Talking with the experts Question from : Gilbert I have recently had lasik eye surgery but only in one eye the surgeon suggested that due to my age if I did both eyes i would lose my short vision but if i did only one eye there was a 70% chance my mind and eyes would adjust but i have noticed that since the surgery my eye lid has been switching a lot, i can feel the nerves moving a lot in the eyelid that the surgery was performed in, should this be something i should be concerned about? thank you for your time Dr. Webber: You now have monovision which permits one eye to see far and the other near. The twitch may be due to visual stress. Give it a few more weeks and it persist you may want to have the other done operated on to reduce the stress on the system., You can also get a pair or reading glasses and see how that works out. Most people are not very happy with monovision since it creates a visual disturbance that the brain is not comfortable with. Question from : margaret jaffer I have a yellow spot on the rim of where the eye coloring starts ...it started with one eye and now I have it in both..what should I do? Dr. Webber: You have Pinguecual which are fatty tissue deposits on the white part of the eye. They are benign. You should be seen by an eye doctor to be sure, and wear sunglasses when outside to keep UV light away from them which makes them worse. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. News Briefs Kids ought to have their eyes examined The eyes have it, but when they aren't working correctly they can set your child up for a lifetime of misery. Finding a problem with the eyes early is key to repairing weaknesses that could lead to blindness later on. Vision screenings and, more importantly, comprehensive eye exams, should be on parents' radars as public school begins. According to a December 2003 study of 1,846 children 6 and younger conducted by Vision Service Plan, a nationwide eye-care benefits provider, seven out of 10 youngsters had never had an eye exam. Only two in 10 had exams before their first birthday. These figures worry the American Optometrist Association, which suggests that children receive their first eye exam by an ophthalmologist, optometrist or family doctor at 6 months and then at age 3 and every two years after that if everything is normal. Children that young can't read the traditional ''big E'' eye chart adults use, of course, but doctors can analyze their eyes using picture symbols and machines. Tests are important because you can't rely on children to alert you to a vision problem. When was the last time your child asked, ``Mom, how come all the trees look like big green blob lollipops?'' ''Children don't realize what normal is,'' Amster says. ``They assume everyone sees everything the way they see it.'' Preventative Medicine Prevent eyestrain at the office Unfiltered fluorescent overhead lighting is one of the leading causes of eye problems for office workers, according to research from the Southern California College of Optometry. But the remedy is simple: Stick a tinted UV filter over the lights in your office and you may eliminate any eyestrain you've been suffering. In a test, researchers placed tinted UV filters over the lights above 49 computer users' desks. Within weeks, the workers claimed to have significantly less blurry vision, eye fatigue, and sensitivity to light than before the trial. To reduce the glare in your office, look for a prismatic, tinted fluorescent-light cover designed to mimic natural sunlight. ----------------------------------------------------------------- CLASSIFIED AD - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - P O P Q U I Z Time-saving ideas, social & business etiquette tips and other practical ways to improve your life and promote personal and professional success. http://www.getswap.com/subscribe.asp?list=1-261 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ----------------------------------------------------------------- CLASSIFIED AD An exquisite collection of affordable crystal collectibles, and Swarovski crystal figurines.
